Lynx Portable Display

The Lynx Portable Display takes video over HDMI only, like a monitor: from a Vision-series camera with the Video Display Module (VDM), or from a computer running ResulTV. VDM is standard on the Vision PRO X and an upgrade on the Vision and Vision PRO.

Most problems match one of the symptoms below. The Portable Display Quick Start Guide has the settings for both methods, and the datasheet has the specifications.

How to fix it

It's HDMI only: no Ethernet, no sending box

  • There is no IP address to set on the display. The RJ45 ports on it carry panel data from its internal sending card, not network data; they can daisy-chain more than one Portable Display.
  • Its video sending unit is built into the housing, so it needs no separate LED sending box like the Infield display.
  • With ResulTV, FinishLynx sends data to the ResulTV computer over Ethernet, and the ResulTV computer sends HDMI to the display.
  • A laptop connected by HDMI treats the display as an extended monitor.
  • A standard passive HDMI cable from an EtherLynx camera is enough. You don't need an active, powered or fiber-optic cable.
  • If the HDMI cable has gone bad, use the other one: the package includes a 50-foot HDMI cable and a shorter one.

If the display shows nothing at all

  1. Confirm the power cord and HDMI cable are connected at both ends. The HDMI runs from the display to the back of the Vision-series camera (with VDM) or to the ResulTV computer.
  2. Confirm an event is open. The running time won't display without one.
  3. In FinishLynx, go to Scoreboard | Options and confirm the scoreboard script is loaded.
    • If Status is Not Loaded, close and reopen FinishLynx.
  4. Confirm the Serial Port is set correctly for your method.
    • VDM: <Camera Name> (HDMI)
    • ResulTV: in FinishLynx set Network (connect), Port 1024 and the IP address of the ResulTV PC; in ResulTV set Network (listen) on the same port, and the Video-Portable profile under File | Options | General.
  5. If the display shows a row of characters and "FinishLynx x86 Monitor" text from the camera, VDM is not active on the camera. See No HDMI option in serial port.
  6. If the settings are right and it still shows nothing, try the other HDMI cable.

If it shows running time but never results

  1. The running time must be stopped before results display. They can't show at the same time.
  2. In Scoreboard | Options, open the dropdown to the right of Running Time and check Force Stop (FinishLynx 13.10 or later). The clock then stops by itself when results arrive.
  3. If you can't update FinishLynx, stop the running time by hand: press Alt+S, or Alt+F when used with a photo eye.
    • Once the running time is stopped, the next evaluation starts the results scrolling.

If the layout is cut off or the wrong size

  1. In Scoreboard | Options, check the Width/Height against the Resolution label on the display (208/104).
  2. Confirm Rotate is Off.
  3. Confirm the size and paging settings for your method: with VDM, Size 3.

If the display doesn't seem to power on

  1. Make sure the power connection clicks in. It needs to be twisted to lock into place.
  2. If it still doesn't power on, use the button below.

If it stopped working after an earlier event

  1. After the camera boots, check Scoreboard | Options still has Serial Port set to <Camera Name> (HDMI).
  2. Check the VDM scripts haven't been edited.
  3. Connect the camera's HDMI to an ordinary TV or monitor. If the TV shows the output, look at the display and its cable; if it doesn't, look at the camera and the FinishLynx settings.
  4. To test the display itself, connect a laptop's HDMI to it. If the laptop's screen appears (even just a corner of the desktop), the display and cable are working.

The video FinishLynx Video Display Module (VDM) shows the camera-driven setup from start to finish.

Good to know

In rain: the front is rated IP65 and the back IP54. Light rain and splashes are fine, but the rear HDMI and power connections are only IP54, so shelter them in heavy rain. More in Rain, weather and storage.
